Abstract
Any second-order linear differential equation with variable coefficients is accompanied by a nonlinear Euler characteristic equation. If its solution is known, then the linear equation itself is solved by lowering the order of the derivative. A condition which feasibility guarantees a solution in quadratures is constructed for the characteristic Euler equation.
