Abstract
In many countries the amount of electrical power consumed by the street lighting is very high. Though, the there are parts of streets where vehicle traffic is very less for a period of time and there are even parts of streets which are completely devoid of traffic for a period of time. If a system is developed such that which automatically turns on the lights for those parts of street where there is a traffic and switches off lights where no traffic is, such type of system may save a huge amount of electrical energy. In addition, it may also reduce the pollution and increase the lifetime of lamps. In short the system automatically monitors and controls the street lights. It only lights those parts of street that have traffic. The smart street lights is a project to intelligently control the illumination of the streets, especially at late night to optimize power consumption. At present the conventional halogen based street lights are replace with LED lights Street lights to reduce the power consumption. Another benefit of LED lights is that its intensity can be controlled very easily. This helps in the designing movement detection based street light system or smart street light system. This paper presents a method to control the power consumption of the street lights, it includes controlling the circuit of the street lights with microcontroller, sensors, and LDR combined with an IOT app which monitors its energy consumption.
