Abstract
Springs are key components in various machines. Composition plays a major role in improving spring's performance. With the advent of advanced computational systems, Numerical analysis have fostered the development in the design of springs. This work presents a review on helical compression springs with a focus on material, methods of analysis and failure criteria. A concept of “hollow helical spring” has also been presented. It features several advantages over conventional springs. It has to overcome the issue of crack generation during its manufacturing. Successful research in this area would pave way for replacement of existing solid helical springs with hollow helical springs.
