Abstract
Fishing has been one of the oldest economic activities of human being in the world. Fishes have both nutritive and curative powers. In international market, Indian fishes have great demand and earn a sizable amount of foreign exchange. In Indian Coastal States, fishing is a major industry. Tamilnadu is one of the leading states in India in fishing activities having coastal length of 1076 kilometers. Tamilnadu has 13 marine coastal districts, 608 marine fishing villages and 363 marine fish landing centres. Tamilnadu has over 9.00,000 fisher-folk populations. Tamilnadu is one of the leading fish producing state in India. The majority of anglers live under high-level poverty and financial instability due to low level of profitability in their fishing activities. In this research paper, an attempt is made to analyses their income and expenditure pattern and analyse the problems and prospects of fisher folk in Poompuhar village of Nagapattinam District, Tamilnadu.
