Abstract

Purpose- TQM is a journey towards improvement where it will help an organisation to understand the concept of continuous improvement and delivers each individual's effort across an organisation and beyond. Employee empowerment and performance measurement are the vertebral columns after TQM's principal to gratify customer needs. An insufficient understanding of TQM creates an environment for failure of implementation of TQM framework. Indian industries started realizing the TQM outcomes in early 1990s and a satisfying TQM culture has been rooted in Indian industrial sector. The purpose of this study is to find the common barriers of TQM implementation in Indian industries and the driving forces which enable an industry to implement TQM. Research Methodology- After a prolonged literature review a questionnaire considering 22 barriers and 12 driving forces to TQM implementation has been prepared. A total of 105 valid responses were received from eight different types of industries where 79 industries have TQM implementation in them and 26 industries don't have it. Findings- There is no significant difference on the basis of means of common barriers to TQM implementation in small, medium and large Non-TQM industries, and there is no significant difference on the basis of means of common barriers to TQM implementation in small, medium and large TQM industries. Research Implications– The study is subject to the regular restrictions of survey investigations and is purely based on the data responded by various respondents across 105 industries which may not provide apparent measures of performance. Originality/value- The study is helpful in portraying the common barriers of TQM implementation in India which might be taken seriously by Non-TQM industries. Whereas, the listed driving forces of TQM implementation will help different industries to look upon towards future.
