Abstract
China's Criminal Procedure Law 2012 has added a pretrial conference system to help judges understand the focus of trials by comprehending and handling the procedural matters prior to trials, in order to improve the hearing efficiency and quality. However, the lack of legislative provisions has restricted the practical application of the system. Ambiguities remain despite a certain refinement role played by the judicial interpretation. Where the legislation has been clarified, a more realistic and feasible approach is to perfect the pretrial conference by means of legal hermeneutics.
