New sources on the history of science in the funds of the Institute of Archival Studies of VNLU

Abstract

The Institute of Archival Studies of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine deals with the issues of documentary history of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and studies the processes of its archival fund formation. The Institute’s activities are aimed at replenishing the fund with new documents. During 2015-2017, the staff of the Institute of Archival Studies of VNLU carried out signifi cant scientifi c work on the formation of archival funds of prominent scientists as part of the archival fund of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. As a result of this activity there are 35 personal archival funds, consisting of more than 39,000 scientifi cally substantiated documents. The documents have a wide variety of types and signifi cant information potential for the study of the activities of the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences and other scientifi c and educational institutions of Ukraine, the development of scientific directions at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the involvement of specialists of academic institutions in the development of various economic and social projects. Available biographical documents and links between Ukrainian scientists and representatives of the scientifi c community of foreign countries are the basis for prosopographical research. This group of sources is attractive to a wide range of researchers in the field of special historical disciplines, as the documents present the logos of institutions, seals, watermarks on paper, a large number of letters and post stamps in greetings and correspondence. The new group of personal documents is a complete source for historical research in general and directly for the study of the history of science, the development of its scientifi c directions, the reconstruction of the activities of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, biographical research and of special historical disciplines.
