Abstract

The research paper gives a general idea of the Arabic long vowel system (ALVS), which in our opinion gives neither the Arabic linguistics, nor the Sciences of the Arabic Language, in particular, Russian studies in Arabic Language and Linguistics. We also define the notion of matres lectionis (calque from Hebrew. ???????? ?? ??? ?? imo:t hakria: verbatum ‘mothers of reading’) for the Arabic Literary Language (ALL) and fix their numbers. Matres lectionis in ALL are written signs not performing their direct function, indicating how the prepositive sign for denoting consonant should be read together with short vowels (a, i, u). We understood using matres lectionis because of the Arabic Language Material (ALM) firstly, orientation towards functioning ?????????imo:t ha-kria: in the ancient Hebrew language and modern Hebrew secondly. From our point of view there are four mothers of reading in the Arabic Literary Language instead of three as it is traditionally considered to be.
