Abstract

The relevance of the study is determined by the need to study translation of a work of fiction as an intellectual activity from the standpoint of cognitive translation studies in conditions of intensive intellectualization of the translation process. Cognitive translation studies have developed from cognitive linguistics and cognitive literature studies and use their research methods to analyze the characteristics and results of translation activities. The article analyses translation strategies aimed at representing the concept of “Englishness” in the Russian translation of some stories by A. Conan Doyle. The article describes and justifies the model of interaction between conceptual elements which influence the choice of translation strategies: the linguistic picture of the world in the culture of the original; the author‟s individual conceptosphere created in the original text; the linguistic picture of the world in the target text culture. The interaction of conceptual elements is explored through conceptual analysis in the course of comparing the concepts of “Englishness” and “Angliyskost‟” and the ways of their representation in the original and the translation. “Englishness” is a concept belonging to English linguoculture, in the process of translation it is reinterpreted as “Angliyskost‟” and included into the Russian linguoculture. The concept of “Englishness” overcomes the intercultural barrier with the help of translation strategies of domestication and foreignization. The practice of conceptual analysis of A. Conan Doyle‟s stories shows that toponyms present one of the forms of verbalizing the concept of “Englishness”, their frequency in texts is conditioned by the genre of the detective. When translating toponyms, the translators equally resort to domestication and foreignization via explanatory additions and careful handling of the realities of English culture, which preserve their national colouring in the text of the translation.
