Abstract
The issue of patriotism of creative emigration representatives was topical in the Russian culture throughout the 20th century. Also in modern Russia, the problem of identity plays an important role. The analysis of emigrant images of abandoned Russia can become an example of the unusual and complex identity of their authors, their creative approach to aestheticizing the image of their homeland. The purpose of the article is to analyze the means of aesthetizing such an image in the works by Marc Z. Chagall, who was born in pre-revolutionary Russia under Vitebsk. His «chanting» of native places and the subsequent emigration made these very places known to the whole world. Also his illustrations of «Dead Souls» by Nikolai Gogol reflected the Russian character and the Russian landlord way of life like in a grotesque mirror.
