Abstract
Characterization of iron sand magnetic material coated with 2- aminobenzimidazole group modified silica was successfully carried out. The synthesized process was through a sol-gel process using sodium silicate, 2- aminobenzimidazole functional group, and 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane as a link agent of silica and functional group. Magnetic material (MM) of iron sand was separated using an external magnet and then washed with distilled water and Hydrogen Fluid (HF) solution of 10%. MM - Silica - Aminobenzimidazole (MMSA) was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometer, Xray diffractometer (XRD), and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). In addition, the effect of acid pH (1-6) on stability was measured by measuring dissolved Fe ions using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) and measuring pH Point Zero Charge (pHPZC). The results showed that the synthesized of MMSA material through a sol-gel process was successful. Stability test showed that MMSA was stable under acidic pH solution. Measurements of the pHPZC indicator showed that the surface of the MMSA was negatively charged at the solution pH of <5.39 and positively charged at the pH of the solution > 5.39. Functionalization of the 2-aminobenzimidazole group allows MMSA to interact specifically with metal ions in solution
