Abstract

Aim- To study the long term safety and efficacy of scleral fixated intraocular lenses(SFIOL) in Paediatric population. Methods- Records of patients below 12 years of age undergoing SFIOL at a tertiary eye care centre over a 2-year period from Jan 2010 to Dec 2011 with a minimum follow up of 1year were reviewed. Data collected included age at time of surgery, indication for SFIOL, pre - and post-operative visual acuity, intra- and post-operative complications if any and condition at final follow up. Results- Sixteen eyes of 13patients (8males, 5females, mean age 7.7years, range 3 to 11 years) were included in the study. Indications for SFIOL were ectopia lentis in 7eyes (43.8),traumatic subluxation in 3 eyes(18.8),dislocated IOLs in 2 eyes(12.5), aphakia following prior surgery in 4eyes (25).Mean follow up was 14months (12-22months).Visual acuity improved from pre-operative levels in 14eyes(87.5) and 7 eyes(43.8) had final visual acuity of 618 or better. Re-surgery was required in 3 eyes (2 for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and one for decentered SFIOL). Conclusion- SFIOL is an effective method of correcting aphakia in children without posterior capsular support. Close follow up is required to detect complications.
