Abstract

Based on the review of literature for 1999-2018, it has been established that there are many means available on the market for individual oral hygiene. The article describes their varieties, in particular, toothpastes and pastes, rinses, gels for the oral cavity, chewing gum and sticks, preparations of the probiotic link. The classification of modern oral care products is given, the indications for their application are described, positive and negative properties are indicated. It is noted that chewing gum can serve as an additional element for the oral cavity cleansing. The article deals with the advantages and disadvantages of chewing gums, the rules of their use, emphasizes the importance of compliance with these rules. It has been established, that toothpastes should be combined and periodically replaced due to dental and hygienic status, depending on their mechanism of action. The use of any oral hygiene product should be correct. Unsolicited application of therapeutic and prophylactic toothpastes and elixirs can apear to be harmful. It also has been mentioned about peculiar syn-thesis of a toothbrush, hygienic toothpaste and environ-mentally friendly chewing gum - chewing sticks (mussa-vak, seed, kvass), which are traditionally used by the people of Africa, Asia, South America and the Mediterra-nean. Nowadays, mussavak is used by more than 10 million people for the oral cavity hygiene. However, the research has shown its preventive efficiency as superior to the effectiveness of a toothbrush. Besides, it should be paid attention to the possi-bility of using probiotic drugs as treatment-prophylactic preparations for the oral cavity. Therefore, a promising new direction in the prevention and treatment of dental diseases, as well as for the normalization of the microflora of the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract is the use of probiotics (living probiotic bacteria), prebiotics (substances that stimulate growth of probiotic microflora) and synbiotics (a combination of pro- and prebiotics). The main mechanisms of probiotics action in the oral cavity are aimed at combination with cariesogenic and periodontogenic microorganisms for ecological niche, normalization of acid-base balance of the oral cavity, reduction of inflammatory phenomena, and increase of local immune protection. Knowing the arsenal of oral hygiene products and correct choosing them will provide primary prevention of caries and periodontal tissue diseases and sustained long-term results of treatment of these diseases (secondary prevention). This choice plays an important role in the development of a patient's prevention and treatment plan, since a significant part of success depends on individual oral care and on the collaboration of the patient with the doctor.
