Abstract
Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare entity resulting from developmental defects at early stages of thyroid gland embryogenesis. A completely ectopic thyroid gland may be located anywhere along the path of the descent of the thyroid during its embryological development. Prevalence of this condition is reported to be between 1 per 100,000-300,000 persons. Lingual thyroid is the most common type accounting for 90 percentage of cases, while sublingual types are less frequently encountered. The sublingual types may be suprahyoid, infrahyoid or at the level of the hyoid bone.
