Abstract

Ochronosis is the dark pigmentation of connective tissues in patients with Alkaptonuria. Alkaptonuria is a rare disease an autosomal recessive trait, in which deposition of Homogentisic acid in the connective tissues cartilage gives brownish-black or bluish black discolouration of deposits known as Ochre. These deposits causes chronic inflammation, degeneration osteoarthritis in spine as well as larger joints. Theres no definitive cure for Alkaptonuric Ochronosis treatment is usually symptomatic. However Total Joint replacements in severe cases of Ochronotic arthritis have favorable outcomes. We present a case of 63 years old male with Ochronotic Arthritis of Hip joint who underwent Total Hip Replacement Post-operative course was uneventful with significantly improved functional outcome post-operatively.
