Abstract

The great path breaking idea of Servant Leadership put forth by Robert Greenleaf (1977)(9) has reached its fourth decade as a concept and it continues to create a quiet revolution in organizations and subsequently around the globe. Servant Leadership emphasizes increased service to others with a holistic approach to work, promoting a sense of community and the sharing of power in decision making. This is the most important aspect to be found in teachers, as they build up the future generation of a country. The characteristic feature of a leader lies in the very word itself as loyal, energetic, amiable, dutiful, empathetic and righteous and if we abbreviate teacher, we find along with the said features of a leader, there is an additional aspect of a teacher being talented, charismatic and honest. Characteristics ascribed to this emerging approach to leadership include building empathy for others, using highly developed powers of motivation and being able to conceptualize and communicate concepts. Servant Leadership has become a guiding force and has been adopted by various organizations. Since its conceptual inception, servant leadership has been espoused by a growing number of researchers as a “valid theory” of organizational leadership(17) with a great promise for both theoretical and practical development.(1)
