Abstract
Primary adenosquamous carcinoma of the ovary is an extremely rare malignancy occurring in less than 1 percentage of all malignant tumors of ovary. Adenosquamous carcinoma of ovary is often a metastasis from cervical carcinoma or a malignant transformation of a preexisting ovarian dermoid cyst or endometriosis. We present a case of primary adenosquamous carcinoma of ovary which has arisen denovo without any background of either endometriosis or mature cystic teratoma. A 52 year old postmenopausal woman presented with a hard mass arising from pelvis extending upto hypogastrium. CA-125 levels were normal. Macroscopic examination showed a solid friable left ovarian mass measuring 12x10x6cm, densely adhered to sigmoid colon. Histopathologic examination revealed primary adenosquamous carcinoma arising from left ovary with no concomitant teratoma or features suggestive of endometriosis. Sections from uterus, cervix and right ovary were non-specific. This case is presented here owing to its rarity of site.
