Abstract
The article discusses the principles and stages of comprehensive assessment of students' needs for the effective development of syllabuses and further teaching methodological support materials in teaching a professionally oriented foreign language at technical universities. The place of students' needs study and various approaches to its application in the process of designing programmes and content selection have been described.
