Abstract
The article examines the evolution of the image of Ukraine in the intellectual discourse of the British Empire on the eve of the beginning of the First World War. The analysis is based on a broad English-language source base, taking into account the specifics of the stateless existence of the Ukrainian people and the competition of other states and political and ideological concepts for the right to control the Ukrainian lands. The article points out a change in the British perceptions of Ukraine under the influence of the abovementioned factors and gives a general assessment of the awareness of the British elites with Ukrainian issues.
