Abstract
Failure to diagnose a fracture of the carpal scaphoid or its inadequate conservative treatment may result in delayed union or non-union. Treatment is then difficult and osteoarthritic change may follow in an untreated case. In scaphoid nonunions the union rate varies according to the stage of the nonunion and the vascularity of the proximal pole. Among the techniques that have been proposed for the management of scaphoid non-unions, the vascularized pedicled grafts from the distal radius were introduced as an alternative treatment method aiming to enhance the local biology and to improve outcome.Studies on patients with scaphoid non-union who underwent vascularized bone grafting based either on the 1,2 intercompartmental artery or the palmar carpal artery 1 have reported union rates up to10024. We report a case of established non-union of the right scaphoid treated using a modified bone- grafting technique with which we achieved early bony union.
