Abstract
Human Parvovirus B19 is a small single stranded DNA virus which causes variety of disease manifestations in human beings and other animals. While mostly infection by parvovirus leads to mild manifestations in normal individuals, it causes severe anaemia and reticulocytopenia in patients with underlying haemolytic or immunosuppressed condition due to its affinity for erythroid progenitor cells. The major diseases caused by this virus include erythema infectiosum, arthropathy, transient aplastic crisis, persistent anaemia, hydrops fetalis and congenital anaemia. While mild illness does not require specific therapy, appropriate blood product transfusions and intravenous immunoglobulins therapy and supportive care is the mainstay of management in severe illness. Here we present a case of parvovirus B19 induced aplastic anaemia and its complications in a previously healthy child. This report highlights the importance of systematic approach to diagnosis and good supportive therapy in the successful management of parvovirus infection
