Abstract
Benign multicystic mesothelioma is a rare cystic mesothelial lesion that occurs predominantly in reproductive aged women. A 53-year-old male was admitted to our surgical department with a chief compla int of abdominal distension for the last 3 years. The physical examination revealed a large multilobulated mass filling all the quadrants of the abdomen. Computed tomography demonstrated a large multiloculated cystic lesion with irregular enhancing septae extending from the epigastrium to the pelvis. The patient underwent near total excision of multicystic tumour arising from the pelvis under general anaesthesia which revealed a large multicystic lesion in the peritoneal cavity arising from the pelvis. The cyst fluid was clear in some and brownish in others. Histological examination revealed multiple cysts with one of the cyst wall showing single layer of cuboidal to flattened cells with no cytological atypia. There was no evidence of malignancy. The final diagnosis was benign multicystic mesothelioma. The patient had a recurrence in the swelling after 2 years. Benign multicystic mesothelioma is an exceedingly rare lesion. A complete resection of the tumor is required. The diagnosis of benign multicystic mesothelioma is based on pathological analysis.
