Abstract

Malaria is the most common parasitic infection. All continents are at risk. But it is particularly a problem of tropical countries. There is no indication that mixed infections protect against severe malaria as was once thought. Mixed P.falciparum and P.vivax infections are common in SE Asia. In most mixed infections where P.falciparum is present, P.falciparum is the dominant population and generally overshadows the other species present. As a result, the true frequency of mixed infection is underestimated. The case is about a 27year old male with mixed vivax and falciparum malaria characterized by fever, jaundice, ARDS and acute renal failure. His parasitemia resolved with the use of Artesunate and Quinine.
