Abstract
Three coals seam of Batu Ayau Formation from Upper Kutai Basin were analyses in order to determine coal geochemistry characteristic and mineralogy properties. Coal samples were collected from active mining and have been analysed with proximate and ultimate coal analysis, Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Geochemically coal has 69.38% of fix carbon (adb), 27.46 % of volatile matter (adb), 0.99% moisture (adb) and 2.17% ash content (adb). The ultimate coal analysis shows 85.51% carbon content (adb) and 0.70% total sulphur content (adb). The coal samples spectra on FTIR analysis indicated the coals are classified into bituminous in rank. XRD analysis of coal shows minerals content on coal samples are clays minerals (kaolinite, smectite), silicate minerals (quartz, sericite, plagioclase and mica), carbonates (calcite, siderite), sulphate (anhydrite) and sulphides (pyrite).
