Abstract

The development of community and industrial economics in Indonesia needs major improvements especially in transport infrastructure including new or substantially improved roads. The Balikpapan – Samarinda toll road in Indonesia was built to provide a robust transport link between Balikpapan and Samarinda. The work on this project required a high level of embankment work on soft soil. During the construction periode there is a settlement and landslide because the soft soil is unable to bear the weight of the backfill. For this reason it is necessary to conduct a geotechnical study to find out the cause of the settlement and find the proper solution. In this case a study of slope stability is needed Geotechnical studies are carried out using data taken from the field and analysis using the Plaxis version 8.2 program The results of the geotechnical study show the Safety Factor (SF) of 1,139 < 1,50 wich mean it is not stable. Reinforcement by using mini piles of 6 m length (8 pieces) and 9 m length (10 pieces) with a spacing of 1 meter for each mini pile result in SF of 1,821 greater than allowable SF. Therefore, the structure is stable
