Abstract
Background: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-carcinogenic (benign) growth of the cells within the prostate gland which is the most common condition affecting men older than 40 years of age. The reason behind this phenomenon is still unsolved, but moreover, this happens due to the tumour growth factor of the prostate gland. BPH symptoms can be related to the condition of a decreased amount of urine (Neerinai Arugal Noi). In Siddha classification, the symptoms of BPH are almost correlated with the symptoms of Vatha Moothira Kirichuram, a type of Moothira Kirichuram with the clinical feature of less amount of urine with increased frequency of voiding. Siddhar Agathiyar mentioned the Siddha drug, Gowri Chinthamani Chendhooram (GCC), a mineralo-mettalic preparation for Moothira Kirichuram in his text named, Agathiyar Vaithiya Kaviyam 1500. Based on these evidences open clinical trial was done and the reports are discussed here.
Aim: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of GCC, Siddha drug in the management of Vatha Moothira Kirichuram (BPH).
Materials and Methods: Open clinical study with 20 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected from OPD, administered with a dose of 100mg GCC, twice a day after food for 48 days with Avarai-ver Kuzhi Thylam as an adjuvant.
Observations and results: GCC showed statistically significant relief in the subjective and objective parameters considered for BPH.
Conclusion: Overall effect of Siddha drug GCC suggests that the drug was safe and effective in improving the outcome of the disease condition, IPSS index and the USG findings.
