Abstract

This study demonstrates that mistreatment of captive wildlife is still a reality in the national territory. The objective of this study was to report cases of maltreatment of the three lions (Panthera leo), male and adult, at the Pouso Alegre Municipal Zoo - MG, Brazil, based on analyzes involving the clinical, expert and necroscopic profile. It is also noted that the number of mistreatment of captive wild animals is probably greater than or equal to animals coming from trafficking. However, the absolute confrontation of these data or information is impracticable on the assumption that a large portion of the specimens is in hiding or without proper supervision. The type of maltreatment practiced and suffered by these animals ranges from an unbalanced diet to the absence of a complete and serialized clinical record.
