Profitability of Dragon Fruits’ Production

Abstract
A Dragon Fruit Production business has been revealed as viable source of food, income and employment. The marketability of Dragon Fruit in the local market is expected to be very high because of limited number of commercial producers of the Dragon Fruit. There is a lot of demand for Dragon Fruit in India. As consumers are getting more and more aware about this Fruit; the demand is increasing steadily. Therefore, it is necessary to study the profitability of Dragon Fruit to adopt the Fruit as commercial crop in the State with the objectives to study the cost of production of Dragon Fruit in selected company; to estimate profitability of Dragon Fruits in selected company and to find the constraints in production of Dragon Fruit in selected company. For the purpose, data is collected from Ruchi Biochemicals on Production costs and returns of Dragon Fruits. From the result, it is found that estimated material cost for one acre Dragon Fruit for five year is Rs.2,17,390.39. Per year estimated material cost ranges between Rs.6, 710 ~ Rs.94,357. First year material cost is low due to no requirement of Packaging material for production. The material cost increases with respect to increase in production of Dragon Fruits per year. Estimated Labour cost for five years is Rs.1, 34, 178. The estimated labour cost declines over the years. The net return also increased to Rs.10, 65, 135 in fifth year. Production of Dragon Fruit increased over period five years, its B: C ratio increased from 0.34 in second year to 6.76 in fifth year. It is concluded that Dragon Fruits production is profitable crop and has considerable potential for the expansion in the country. Excepts for high initial establishments cost due to the use of trellises, the other agronomic practices are easy and less expensive, hence the low maintenance cost. Hence Dragon fruits production can be widely adopted in country.
