Abstract
Hydrogen, an abundant element and this diatomic molecule is trending as an alternative energy source. Hydrogen can be produced as metabolic byproducts of fermentation by some microorganisms. In this study, biohydrogen was produced using Enterobacter sp SU-16 having lactose as carbon source. Hydrogen production was monitored using water displacement method and the produced hydrogen was characterized using GC analysis. Metabolite formation was also checked by HPLC analysis. Displacement of water in terms of hydrogen production was found as maximum as 35 ml/L was recorded at the early stationary phase, there was also pH drop to 5.4.
