Abstract

The importance of trachoma blindness in Mali makes its control a priority of eye health services. The purpose of our study was to assess the epidemiological aspect of trachoma into the Tominian area.Trachoma is a transmissible keratoconjunctivitis mainly caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. We conducted a cross-sectional study that ran from January 29 to February 23, 2009, involving 1,519 individuals, including 849 children aged 0 to 5 years and 670 women aged 40 and over. The prevalence of trachoma was 12.4% for children aged 0-5 and 14% for women aged 40 and over. Trachomatous trichiasis was the most common complication with a prevalence of 3.4% in women 40 years and older. Trachoma and its complications are a public health problem that must be addressed in the near future.
