Abstract

The philosopher who established the science of logic is Aristotle. Aristotle posed and elaborated it against the Sophists who argued the possibility of true knowledge. In this respect, logic is also the science of knowledge. Aristotle achieved the triumph against sophists by his works, which were named later as Organon. By his logical works, he saved people from confusing and being skeptical because of Sophists. Plato attempted to do the same thing by geometry and dialectics, but he did not achieve. Because counting and measuring is not knowledge. After Aristotle, Organon was accepted as the method of science and philosophy. Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā continued the same tradition in Medieval Ages. On the contrary, of Ancient Ages, there was not any group, which is called Sophists in the middle Ages. However, during the times of al-Fārābī, some linguists wanted to locate linguistics instead of logic. In addition, by asserting that logic is a tool of theology, some theologians attempted to include logic in theology. In the modern age and later, the subject matters of logic are shared by philosophy and science, and only the matters of proposition and syllogism remained to logic. On the one hand, some located logic in mathematics; on the other hand, some accepted logic as a meta-language. In our era, we can say that Sophists have shown up again because of an involution by various means. In order to prevent some destructive effect of this situation, the logical tradition should be appreciated, as it deserves in educational fields.
