Abstract
Abstract: Adiponectin is one of the most widely investigated adipokine, secreted by adipocyte and has diverse implications in human health and disease. Decreased level of adiponectin concentration is associated with insulin resistance, abnormalities in carbohydrates, lipid and protein metabolism. Objective: To determine the association of serum adiponectin, insulin and lipoprotein in patients of Type2 Diabetes Mellitus and non-diabetics. Methods: It was a cross-sectional comparative study, 80 subjects were taken, 60 diagnosed cases of T2 DM, out of them 30 were newly diagnosed without any treatment and 30 were on oral hypoglycemic treatment. And 20 subjects served as controls which were age and sex matched. Serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL- C and LDL-C were estimated by standard laboratory techniques. Serum insulin and serum adiponectin levels were estimated by using ELISA technique., data were analyzed with SPSS version 21.0. Results: Adiponectin levels in diabetics taking medication was slightly higher than diabetics who were not on medication. In diabetic groups, mean insulin levels were signicantly lower and glucose and all lipid fractions except HDL levels were signicantly higher than controls. Conclusions: HDL levels were similar in diabetics and controls. No correlation was found between adiponectin levels, insulin and lipids. Adiponectin levels were lower in diabetics as compared to the control group. However, it was not correlated with insulin and lipid levels. Key words: Adiponectin, Insulin, Lipoprotein, Lipids, Type-2 diabetes mellitus.
