Abstract
Abstract: Researchers supported the role of okra in gaining a reputation of a super food when it comes to controlling diseases or disorders such as diabetes. It is also commonly known as ladynger while scientic names are hibiscus eschulentus or abelmoshcuseschulentus. Recent years have gathered much evidence stating that okra is a major blood glucose lowering food. This was made possible by conducting a variety of vitro and vivo studies. Other than scientic research, surveys conducted across countries have highlighted the fact that okra is effective in lowering blood glucose level. People have been consuming okra juice extracted through soaking cut okra sections overnight in a glass of water. Regular consumption of this juice has led to reduced level of blood glucose overtime. In addition to this, Turkey has been using roasted okra seeds as a traditional diabetes remedy since centuries. After thorough study of the composition of okra plant, it was known that an insoluble ber which constitutes okra has been found to play a major role in the reduction of blood glucose level by decreasing the rate at which glucose is absorbed from intestinal tract. Furthermore, okra also assists in avoiding the spikes in blood sugar level after a meal. This is brought about by its benecial effect on the rate at which blood glucose is absorbed by the body cells. Effective uptake of glucose by body cells helps lower the level of circulating glucose in the blood, which in turn has a positive effect on the management and control of diabetes.
