Abstract
Many children ages 5 to 8, struggle with reading. One estimate is that about 10 million children have difficulties learning to read. The good news is that 90-90% of reading impaired children can overcome their difficulties if they receive appropriate treatment at early stages. Learning about the early warnings and signs that put early childhood learners at risk for reading difficulty and understanding normal development milestones helps with early diagnosis and intervention. This study proposes the developmental approach as an effective early intervention strategy for dyslexic early childhood learners. Developmental Approach gives pre-service and experienced teachers the knowledge and tools they need to teach reading and writing effectively and engagingly in pre-K through grade 8 settings (Templeton et.al, 2014). This teaching approach was developed to invigorate teaching in a student-centered and research based-manner giving educators and primary caregivers a clear understanding of a learner's stages of development most especially to learners who struggles in acquiring the basic set of vital skills needed for them to learn better in school. This study anchors itself to two theories Vygotsky's Theory of Learning (1978) wherein he stated that “development precedes learning” and Anderson's and Krathwohl's –Bloom's Taxonomy Revised (2001). The researchers enumerate the factors that affects a child struggling in reading and discovers the efficiency of the proposed developmental approach as an
effective tool in aiding reading difficulty.
