Abstract
This article addresses, from a cultural perspective, the phenomenon of development and the models implemented in Latin American countries with the aim of understanding the relationship between the quality of life of people and their consumption habits. Particularly important in this analysis is the demand for luxury goods and cultural goods in some countries of the region, but particularly among the Colombian middle class in the last ten years. Additionally, it analyzes consumption and its relation to development, the consumption behavior of luxury goods versus the demand for cultural goods, and the symbolic aspect of consumptionas a crucial and explanatory factor in the decline of demand for cultural goods in countries of the region such as in Colombia.
