AN ETYMOLOGICAL EVAULATION ON THE WORD “ZOO” AND ON THE SOME PLACE NAMES IN KYRGYZ TURKIC LANGUAGE

Abstract

There is the word zoo “a rock, or rocky cliff” in Kyrgyz Turkic language, which is not well known in other Turkic languages. The word kaya is used for “a rock, or rocky cliff” both in the Old Turkic and in most modern Turkic languages. However, according to some scholars, the root of the word kaya and the word kıya in Kyrgyz is similar. The etymology of the word kaya has been studied, but no etymology has been conducted on the word zoo. Another important issue related to this word zoo is the place names in Kyrgyzstan. The most place names are loanwords. When we look at the etymology of some place names, we see that the words are quoted the meanings tree, water, shore. In this study, the etymological explanation of the word zoo and the place names Boom, Narın, Çek-Nura/Orta-Nura, Alamüdün, Ala-Arça, will offered. In this study, each word is dealt separately and compared with some modern Turkic languages.
