Abstract

Intertextuality, one of the most frequently used concepts in contemporary literary criticism, is a discourse which argues that every text has a meaning only in relation to other texts, and a text cannot produce meaning independently from all other texts, and places the reading action on the network of textual relations. The purpose of this study is to reveal that Kafkaesque references were used as an artistic tool in Murakami's Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, drawing on intertextual discourse. In this article, the relationship between Murakami's Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World and Kafka's Metamorphosis will be discussed in the context of intertextuality, considering Kafkaesque alienation and isolation in Murakami's work focusing on the door metaphor. A close reading of both texts reveals that the door metaphor plays a core role in both works. In addition, the armor-shell metaphors in both novels will be examined and an explanation will be made for the self-protection impulse. This study focuses on Kafkaesque metaphors used by Murakami and aims to explore these small details which create the work are among the important pieces that reflect the world of the novel.
