Abstract

The core of the article is the comparative analysis at the level of artistic expression of the works “The Lafertovo Poppycake Seller” by Anthony Pogorelsky and “The Golden Pot” by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, both belonging to the genre of romantic phantasmagoria. At the center of the analysis is the work of Pogorelsky, who is not just inheriting but also rethinking Hoffmann's literary tradition in the light of Russian moralizing sentimentalism. In the course of the study, the works are compared in terms of the characters, imagery and worldview attitudes of the authors, which determine both the fundamental differences and the similarities in their works. At the beginning of the article, current standing of Pogorelsky's work in the contemporary public eye is described. Relevant details of the author's biography are also touched upon as pertinent to understanding his significance in the literary environment of his contemporaries and the connection with the work of Hoffmann. In addition to researching primary sources, the comparative analysis is supported by references to critical literature and statements made by the author's contemporaries. Examples of the influence of “The Lafertovo Poppycake Seller” on the ideological worldview and imagery in the works of key authors of Russian classical fiction are briefly given. The analysis demonstrates originality of Pogorelsky's work and its significance in the development of the Russian literary tradition, despite the evident fundamental influence of the work of his inspirer, E.T.A. Hoffmann.
