Abstract

With every successive increase in urban population, what increases is the demand for food, shelter and livelihood. Also, these demands are recurring in nature. They pose continual pressure on the existing land available for these segregated usages, thus calling for a serious approach shift in the existing patterns of management of urban entities. Over the period of time, inclusion of element of sustainability, socio economic wellbeing, planned processes of amenity and service development for long run and creating a balance between development needs and urban living environment has become a major concern and challenge for academics, researchers, policy makers, planners and administrators. This paper is an attempt to rethink urban development and outline a management-based approach for urban entities of present world, keeping into consideration socio-economic-environmental concerns, sustainability issues and nurturing of the physical and economic ecosystem for generations surviving and yet to come. It also attempts to present a process-based framework for inclusive and sustainable urban planning and development of cities, leveraging management approaches, models and tools, focusing on the bigger picture and comprehensively taking into account various important aspects related to city identity, distinctiveness, competitiveness, wellbeing and sustainability
