Abstract
This study investigates the efficiency impacts of M&A in Vietnamese banking market from 2008 to 2018. Our work contributes to the current literature of bank efficiency with the focus on customer perspective and the distinction between loan segment and deposit segnment in the market. Using Data Envelopment Analysis as the measurement instrument, the study shows that the efficiency improvement purpose is not fulfilled in all M&A cases. At the same time, there existed a regressive shift of efficiency frontiers throughout the years in Vietnamese banking market. The results provide bank managers and policymakers insight into the performance of the system from the customer perspective and suggest a cautious approach to M&A decisions. A goal-oriented approach to efficiency assessment is thereby recommended for future bank studies
