Abstract
The use of industrial by-product is a common practice for the improvement of soft soil. It reduces the disposal exercise. The manufacturing of the Steel is done by many processes. Corex process is one of them. Corex slag is the by-product in the production of steel through the corex process. This paper presents the study of corex slag for the improvement of soft soil. A model laboratory test was conducted on soft soil, reinforced by the group of Corex Slag Columns (CSC) in floating and rest on sand condition. Three different geometrical positions, at different spacing concerning the diameter, was adopted for the tests. Corex slag columns were installed by a cast in situ. A dens sand layer was placed to support the corex slag columns, for rest on sand condition. The length to diameter ratio of 4.0 was kept in all the laboratory tests. Significant increases in load-carrying capacity have been found when soft soil is reinforced with the group of the corex slag columns.
