Abstract
In the current competitive climate, educational organisations need to take the initiative to improve their campus environment. Universities can be considered small cities; hence, one path to improvement is creating a ‘smart campus' that is based on applying ‘smart city' principles. The notion of the ‘smart campus' is integral to the rapid development of information and communication technologies (ICT) that have shaped the so-called fourth industrial revolution. The first step towards achieving this aspiration is to develop a clear understanding of how to transform a traditional campus into a smart campus. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to propose a roadmap to support university managers' plans for such a transformation. To construct this roadmap, two avenues of research are pursued: the best practices of the smart campus venture around the world and the trending ICT technologies that shape the smart campus.
