Abstract

Aim: This research is a descriptive study and it was conducted to evaluate the depression, hopelessness and quality of life of hematology patients. Method: The study was carried out between December 2014 and June 2015 with 109 patients being treated at hematology clinics of Ankara Atatürk Education and Research, Gazi University, Hacettepe University, Ankara University and Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospitals in Ankara. Socio-demographic data collection form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BDI) and Quality of Life Scale (EORTC QLQ-C30) were applied to the patients. Findings: In the study, 19.3% of the hematology patients were in the 18-25 age group and 58.7% of them has leukemia diagnosis. The difference between hematology patients' age and physical anxiety which is the BDI subscale, future expectations, motivation loss which are the BHS subscales, functional status which is the EORTC QLQ-C30 subscale, BDI score median and EORTC QLQ-C30 general scale score median were statistically significant. In addition, the difference between the participants' educational level and hopelessness and guilt sense subscale; the median score of the institution receiving treatment and the negative emotion subscale score median were statistically significant. There is a strong, positive, linear relationship between the BDI general score and hopelessness which is the BDI subscale. There is a medium positive linear relationship between the BDI and the BHS overall score points. BHS andEORTC QLQ-C30 scales has a positive relationship between their general score averages. Conclusion: Hematology patients were found to be susceptible to depression, despair, and in this way the quality of life was adversely affected.
