Abstract

Purpose: This research was carried out to determine the knowledge levels and attitudes of nursing students about authentication required for patient safety in clinical practice settings, as descriptive. Method: The sample of the study consisted of 73 students attending Istanbul Yeni Yuzyil University Faculty of Health Sciences Nursing Department in 2019-2020 Education-Training Year. Data was collected by using ‘questionnaire form' related to attitudes and the knowledge levels of nursing students about authentication required for patient safety. In the analysis of the data, was used Mann-Whitney U test and the the Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.05). Findings: When the patient safety authentication information and attitude expressions are evaluated according to the class, there is no statistically significant difference (p = 0.427, p = 0.468, respectively); however, when making binary comparisons between groups, it was determined that the knowledge level and attitudes of 3rd-grade students about authentication were higher and better than 2nd grade and 4th-grade students. Conclusion: Nursing students who participated in the study appear to be conscious about patient safety. In addition, raising awareness about patient safety for students who continue their education process may reduce the likelihood of students making a medical error in their working life after graduation.
