Abstract

One of the most important investment avenues constituting thousands of securities in the stock market. NSE, the first exchange in the country to provide a modern fully automated screen-based electronic trading system provides broad market indices that serve as a benchmark for measuring the performance of the stocks or portfolios. The current study makes a comparative analysis of the share price movements of Reliance Industries representing the manufacturing sector and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) representing the service sector with the corresponding NIFTY movements. An attempt was also made to analyse the growth trend of the share price movements and market movements. Further, a comparative analysis of return, volatility, and risk of shares representing the two sectors and market index was also done. Semi logarithmic trend, daily return, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and beta values were computed and analysed. Further econometric tools of analysis were also made use of in the study. The analysis revealed that Reliance Industries shares had a higher growth rate and higher risk compared to TCS and the corresponding market index values.
