Abstract

The article proposes the hypothesis that the novel by Y. O. Dombrovsky “The Birth of Mouse” is a kind of “draft” of the writer's work, which was subsequently rewritten by him in later and more perfect works from the formal and substantive point of view. The author covers the history of the novel in novels and short stories, analyzes the texts of which the novel consists. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of the plot composition of the novel, as well as its connections with other texts of the writer. The author comes to the conclusion that the novel is in the group of transformational compositions with a shift in the plot, which is expressed in violation of the chronological order of the episodes, which shows, on the one hand, on the unfinished in this novel the search for Y. O. Dombrovsky art form, “unfinished” artistic statement. The conducted study allowed to conclude that in the novel the stories and the stories of “The Birth of Mouse” ideas of the future prose writer only concisely outlined, and the work is a kind of prototype of the later prose by Dombrovsky, as evidenced by the number of similar elements of the novel “The Birth of Mouse” with other novels of the writer: “The Ape is coming to pick up its Skull”, “Keeper of Antiquities” and “Faculty of Useless Knowledge”. This manifests itself at the plot and motivational level, as well as in the development of characters, themes and types of narrative.
