Abstract
The article analyzes the reasons for the beginning of border conflicts between the USSR and Japan in 1935–39, as well as the influence of that conflicts on the refusal of Japan to enter the war with the Soviet Union in 1941. Further analysis is focused on forces, sides and factors that influenced the defeat of the Kwantung army by Red Army forces.
