Abstract
The article is devoted to analyzing the problem of assessing students' performance in EFL learning for beginners. The issue of evaluating and assessing students' skills in EFL has proved to be burning. There are traditional and alternative assessment techniques designed by both Russian and foreign educationists. Obviously, each of the techniques has its advantages and disadvantages. Besides, while selecting some approach to assessment and control the following aspects should be taken into consideration: age characteristics, the context of the usage, the goal of the assessment, the set of skills to be assessed etc.
