Abstract
Exhaust emissions from diesel engine with fossil fuels cause health hazards and cause environmental effects. Vegetable oils and biodiesel are important substitutes for diesel fuel. However, drawbacks associated with crude vegetable oils of low volatility and high viscosity cause combustion problems in compression ignition (CI) engine. Biodiesels derived from vegetable oils present a very promising alternative for diesel fuel, since they have numerous advantages compared to fossil fuels. They are renewable, biodegradable and provide energy security and foreign exchange savings besides addressing environmental concerns and socio–economic issues. Nano particles improve combustion as they have good thermal conductivity. Biodiesel blended with nano particles further improve combustion and reduce pollution levels of compression ignition engine. Investigations were carried out to determine exhaust emissions of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust of conventional diesel engine with tamarind biodiesel blended with nano particles with varied injection timing and opening injector pressure. Data is compared with neat diesel operation.
