Abstract
Shear wall is one of the most popular lateral load resisting systems along with moment resisting frame for medium to high-rise buildings. It can be observed that, the rigid frame system becomes uneconomical as the height of the building increases more than 25 storey. Shear wall combined with rigid frame makes the structure stiffer and proves to be economical up to 50 storeyheight. In the high-rise structural system shear wall is an integral component to resist lateral loads. However, due to localization of reinforcement at the end of the element, conventional reinforced concrete shear wall has limited use in the high-rise buildings. One of the solutions for this limitation is composite shear wall. This paper attempts to estimate the effectiveness of reinforced concrete shear walls with encased steel profiles. The seismic behavior of concrete shear wall reinforced with I-sections and hollow box steel sections at different locations within the wall is studied. The seismic performance of mid-rise buildings with reinforced concrete shear wall and composite shear wall panels has been compared.
